Sondheim’s musical comedy "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," as we know, is a Toga-clad romp filled with shenanigans, hijinks, and tomfoolery and scheming. Designer Shannon Roberts chose to double down on the show's traditional three door ground plan by expanding each house to include a second floor (double the doors makes double the fun when it comes to stage comedy!) The cartoon-like sense of humor was heightened with an equally cartoon-like palette and treatment, with the original model hand-rendered using highlighter. Each house is finished with a separate stucco texture, and the terracotta & roof tiles are made from recycled cardboard and carpet tubing. The set also features a fountain with Vegas-style fountain pump that shot water up to 10ft in the air during the show's finale and grand dance numbers.
